Malayalis across the world are preparing with excitement and fervour, to celebrate  Onam — the harvest festival of the state. The biggest festival in Kerala, the celebrations will be on from September 13-14.  The festival commemorates the home-coming on the mythical king Mahabali and falls during the month of Chingam (August-September), according to the Malayalam calendar. The many and elaborate traditional festivities during Onam, makes it a unique festival. A lot of cultural elements are infused in the celebrations, making it a colourful and a grand affair. For instance, vallam Kali (snake boat race), pulikali, pookalam,, tug of war, etc., are only some of the various activities people engage in during Onam.
Legend goes that the King Maveli (also referred to as Mahabali and Onathappan) brought the golden era to the state of Kerala with his generosity and kindness. It is believed that King Maveli returns from the netherworld each year during Onam to bestow blessings upon his beloved community. Onasadhya — the traditional nine-course meal with at least 11-12 dishes is an essential part of the celebrations.
