Rio Olympics 2016: Day 1

Hello and welcome to The Australian’s live coverage of the Rio Olympic Games. It’s day one and Australia already have two gold medals thanks to 400m freestyle swimmer Mack Horton and the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, as well as a bronze in the men’s archery competition.

It’s GOLD again for Australia in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay... and a new world record! Incredible performance from Cate & Bronte Campbell, Emma Mckeon and Brittany Elmslie.
Australia beat silver medallists the United States, clocking 3 minutes 30.65 seconds and bettering Australia’s previous world-best mark of 3:30.98 set at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
